Writing instruments for daily use

Made to write with.

Fountain pens you fill, rollerballs you refill, brass pocket pens you carry. Every pen lists its full specification: nib size, body material, length, weight, ink system, and what it is not for. No adjectives where a number will do.

The specification

Most pen shops tell you a pen is elegant. We would rather tell you it weighs 46 grams capped, that the brass will go brown in a month, and that the cap takes a turn and a quarter to open. You can decide about elegant yourself.

What it is made of

Stated to the alloy and the process: 'C360 brass, lathe-turned, unlacquered', not 'metal'. 'Cast acrylic, turned from rod', not 'resin'.

What it measures

Length capped and posted, diameter at the grip, weight with and without the cap, on every pen. The most common return on a pen site is a pen that felt heavier or thicker than imagined.

What it is not for

The line most shops leave out. Not for carbon copies. Not for a shirt pocket on a flight. Not for anyone who wants brass to stay bright. Better read now than discovered later.

Six materials

A short list, on purpose.

Six materials, chosen because they hold up to daily carry. Each behaves in a specific way: brass takes on a patina, anodizing shows a scratch, leather darkens, paper ghosts under a broad nib. We would rather explain that than pretend otherwise.

Brass

C360 free-machining brass, turned on a lathe and left unlacquered. It tarnishes within weeks and darkens over years; that is the finish, not a defect. Polishes back with any brass polish.

Aluminum

6061 alloy, hard-anodized after machining. About half the weight of brass at the same size. The anodized layer resists scratches but shows them as bright metal if one gets through.

Resin

Cast acrylic, turned from rod rather than injection-molded. Light in the hand at 22 g, warm to the touch, and dents rather than cracks when dropped.

Steel

Stainless steel nibs with a hard alloy tip, tuned before they ship. Spring-steel clips. Neither rusts in a pocket or a bag.

Leather

Vegetable-tanned full-grain, 2 mm, saddle-stitched with waxed linen thread. Darkens and softens with handling; rain marks it.

Paper

90 gsm, sized for fountain pen ink so a medium nib dries in about 15 seconds without feathering. Some ghosting with broad nibs; no bleed.
